The Most Wonderful Time of Year!

The holidays come with 2 weeks off from school if you have school-age children. I am the appointed planner of all things fun our family does during the break. I like to celebrate the holiday season by doing several light events. One of my favorite traditions is to pack up the kids in the car along with hot chocolate and cookies and drive through the Windcrest area of San Antonio looking at all the beautiful displays.

Another free place to visit is the University of the Incarnate Word. A walk with the kids through the campus after dinner, maybe with more hot chocolate or coffee, is a beautiful site with millions of lights installed. This is something we have been doing since Audrey was a toddler and now do it with friends to make it more fun!

The San Antonio Botanical Garden also has the Lightscape event which we plan on attending for the first time. You can go online and reserve tickets for a specific date. In the past, we have done the San Antonio Zoo lights, but it was a very crowded event that I didn’t quite enjoy.

My children also love to go ice skating at the Northwoods skating rink. Since it doesn’t get very cold in Texas, we like to go to the rink and enjoy the freezing temperatures!

We end the year with “Noon Year’s Eve” at We Rock the Spectrum which is so perfect for kids who will not stay up until midnight to celebrate the new year.

Whatever you end up doing during the holiday winter break just remember to also take time to relax and recharge.

Magaly studied fashion merchandising at the University of the Incarnate Word, but after having a child with Down syndrome, became interested in serving the disability community by learning how to advocate for them. She spent 2 1/2 years as the Regional Coordinator for Partner's Resource Network, a non-profit organization supporting parents of children with disabilities. The DSASTX has made a significant impact on her family's life and introduced her daughter, Audrey, to lifelong friendships. In her spare time, Magaly enjoys home projects, brunch, and spending time with her family.
